The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has appealed to residents of the three states under emergency rule to be calm as the socio- economic challenges caused by the emergency rule would soon be over as stability gradually returns to the states. The speaker also justified the emergency rule declaration, saying there were good reasons for it; and commended the residents of Adamawa for cooperating with security agencies in “bringing stability”. Mr. Tambuwal stated this in Adamawa on Wednesday when he flagged off the distribution of 240 tricycles to women and over 52,000 school bags to pupils. The materials were donated by Ashaitu Ahmed, a People’s Democratic Party lawmaker representing Girei, Yola North, and Yola South in the House of Reps. “For good reasons we have had to impose emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. The security situation in these areas became a source of grave concern to government as lives and property became debased,” Mr. Tambuwal said. Mr. Tambuwal empathized with the residents, saying the presidency understood how they felt and would respond soon. “At the appropriate time, the presidency will have to review the situation and lift the emergency rule soon,” he said. Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa said he was at the occasion to honour Mr. Tambuwal, whom he described as an “honourable man.” The governor renamed a street in Yola metropolis after the speaker. “Time and time again he (Mr. Tambuwal) has shown himself committed to the cause of justice and equity for all people in the country,” Mr. Nyako said. Other public officials at the event include the Adamawa Deputy Governor, Bala Ngillari, and the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, who applauded the initiative as complementary to government’s transformational effort in the educational sector. Mr. Wike was full of thanks for President Goodluck Jonathan’s role in granting import waiver for the importation of the items procured from China estimated to have cost nearly N60 million. He said the government cannot be left alone to meet the enormous challenges confronting the educational sector and thus called on other individuals, faith based organizations, non-governmental agencies, and other critical stakeholders to step-in to salvage the educational sector. A mild drama occurred to enliven the crowd at the occasion. One of the praise singers, while eulogizing Mr. Tambuwal, beckoned on him in the native Hausa dialect to commit himself to plans to wrest power from “mai guton wondo a sama;” a slant in Hausa which could be translated to “a man of a different stock at the helm”, implying Mr. Jonathan, come 2015. While the crowd laughed loud over the praise singer’s comment, a nonplussed Mr. Wike looked puzzled, apparently unaware of the cause of the sudden mood change of the crowd.
