Description Protest against the promulgation of sec 144 Criminal Procedure Code in Ukhrul district, Manipur on the 13th of July,2014 as an aftermath of the unfortunate death of late Mr.Ngalangzar Malue(member, autonomous council, Ukhrul District) at Finch Corner (Ukhrul District) in the hands of unidentified individuals.Rather than objectively investigate and identify the culprits,the Manipur state government imposed section 144 CrPc in Ukhrul and deployed hundreds of Manipur police commandos and IRB personnel in the name of maintaining law and order but which has rather disrupted and paralyzed the peace and tranquility of the citizens of Ukhrul town.Such an act of militarization is nothing but a blatant display of military might and an attempt to cower the free and independent spirit of the citizens of Ukhrul. The imposition of CrPC 144 in Ukhrul is a transgression of our fundamental rights to peaceful assembly and the customary practice of the Nagas of public gathering and consultations both in times of joy and sorrow. It has been 31 days since the imposition of CrPc144 in Ukhrul town and despite several appeals from various Naga civil organisations for the removal of such a controversial law there is still not a whisper and assurance of its removal by Manipur state government.
