Facebook Video The Characteristics of a Behavioral Programme. Segment of presentation by Dr Vincent J. Carbone, Ed.D., BCBA-D presented in Dubai on September 5th and 6th 2014, from the Workshop: An Introduction to Teaching Language and Basic Skills to Children with Autism and Related Disabilities & Reducing Problem Behavior. The characteristics of a behavior approach start with B.F. Skinners Analysis of Verbal Behavior derived from his 1957 book. Verbal Behavior is an analysis of how we teach language, and is part of an Applied Behavior Analysis programme. Dr Carbone contrasts the behavioral approach to traditional approaches by psycholinguists and developmentalists, who view language as an innate biological process, and think that children with autism do not acquire language easily because those innate processes are broken in some way. These traditional explanations are not useful for teaching language to children with autism, they are explanatory fictions. Applied Behavior Analysis is a much more practical, direct and environmental approach, without relying on what is going on in childrens minds. Knowing how a typical child learns is very important to decide how to teach children with autism. Genetic endowment accounts for a small amount of behavior, but a much larger part is accounted by environmental principles that interact with a person from birth. The basic principles of Behavior Analysis are: stimulus control, motivation, reinforcement, extinction and punishment. Punishment just reflects that when bad things happen after behavior, the behavior is less likely to be repeated. Antecedent procedures are used to get responses to occur, and then behaviors are selected through consequences. In a child with autism the behavior principles affect them differently than in typical children, and the behavior principles have to be applied intensely to these children, because subtle, everyday life events dont teach them skills the way typical children learn. The literature supports that children treated with a behavior approach obtain better outcomes than children who do not. The Carbone Clinic in Dubai treats children with autism. Our treatment follows the methodology developed by Dr Vincent Carbone in his New York clinic. This means high levels of supervision and certified senior staff with the right credentials to provide superior ABA services.
