Facebook can be a blessing and a curse sometimes. But over the past two years, it has been one of the most informative and educational aspects of my career. There are a lot of great trainers, researchers and nutritionists on it who graciously provide us with data based information that help us to make fact based decisions regarding health, exercise and nutrition. In the process, they have helped change several of my closely held beliefs. This research study recently provided by Dr. Jose Antonio of the International Society of Sports Nutrition changed my notion that fast weight loss = fast weight regain. Apparently this is not the case when a group of slow and steady weight loss individuals were compared to a group of rapid weight loss individuals. There was an equal amount of individuals in both groups who regained the weight. My impression is still that slower weight loss may ingrain better long-term habits but perhaps those that lose weight rapidly can be coached up to the habits for better long term retention. I have not yet read the whole study and as always information on the outliers may provide some more insight. (If you want it message me).
