Facebook friends: Could you please take a minute to look this important post from my dear friend, BabaCharles Simmons, Professor Emeritus, at Hush House International? He always seems to capture the very essence of issues and I am so proud to say that he is my friend in the fight for social justice. What has happened across the country in higher education is definitely a justice issue, as he points out. The reality is that most of the teaching being done at U.S. colleges and universities is being done by part time and non-tenured faculty who receive the respect, treatment and benefits of peasants at the bottom of the food chain. In addition, many of them have to travel from one work site to another throughout the state just to make ends meet. Many of them have no union of their own and are not protected by the major labor associations and unions of full time tenured faculty. If they speak out about this injustice, too often their contracts are not renewed. Tenured faculty and student organizations are going to have to unite in the fight for economic justice for these educators, or the U.S. academic system will face increasing chaos, strikes, and disruption of the so-called education that comprises American higher education. This is one of the many problems facing higher education. We must also discuss racism, elitism, Wall Street/Pentagon control, the crisis of capitalism, and the content of education for the 21st century. (Baba Charles/Emeritus Professor/at the Hush House)
