Facebook friends, I have posted this once before. I feel that it should be posted again in case anyone missed it. This is an urgent matter and I am requesting your help to save Professor Schuele. I was saddened to hear that Dr. Schueles time at UC Irvine could be cut short, as the administration has decided to terminate her employment at the end of this Winter Quarter. Learning this news was devastating, and student who have had the opportunity to take one of her courses or work with her on a project are feeling the heartache.. Few words can describe how vital Professor Schuele is to the University, but Ill try nonetheless. The first two courses I took with Dr. Schuele in the spring of 2014 were Children’s Rights and American Law; I later enrolled in American Legal Thought and Constitutional Law. I was amazed to learn that she earned her Ph.D. and J.D. from Berkeley, and has taught at prestigious law school. She has also served as a Judicial Law Clerk in federal courts, and a tort litigation defense attorney, both of which have contributed to her extensive background in law. However, I was most surprised by her love for the students whom she has the opportunity to teach. To Dr. Schuele, her students were not just numbers. She made an immense effort to know every students name, and to pronounce each name correctly. She has engaged in countless student-teacher discussions during class and happily stays after class to address additional questions and concerns from students. She reserves time slots during lecture to bring guest speakers into the class so that students can see a human connection between the course material and how it relates to the real world. Through asking students to handwrite notes rather than typing during her lectures, she has been able to engage students in in-depth discussions and debates, which encourages critical thinking and leads to new ideas about the material. Her assignments are writing-intensive, allowing for the synthesis and reflection of the material rather than mere memorization. She provides optional readings in addition to the required readings so for those who are interested to delve deeper into the material. In addition to all of her positive qualities, the amount of work, time and dedication she commits to students outside of class to is extensive. She is always available for office hours and if not, she arranges alternative hours for students to see her and makes sure they are informed of the changes to see her. She assists students in their various needs, providing mentorship, help with assignments, and assistance with law and graduate school application processes. She holds meetings for informal pre-law advising, and offers open opportunities for students to engage in research with her. A perfect example would be the opportunity she gave me in helping her write a biography on Sandra Day OConnor. This opportunity will be cut short if her employment is terminated. Her courses are rigorous and awe inspiring, and offer engaging material and relevant substance. In my experience as an undergraduate at UC Irvine, she is one of top professors on campus. To have a professor with such influence is a rare exception. It is instructors like Professor Schuele that make me want to continue my education, and explore the possibility of being a professor myself, so that I can give back to students in the same way she does. I am fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to be a student of Professor Schueles, and hope the administration allows other students to have that same opportunity.
