Facing the Prophet ﷺ While Supplicating Once caliph Abu Ja‘far Mansur visited Medina & he asked Imam Malikؒ: “While supplicating, should I turn my face to theprayer niche [and turn my back to the Holy Prophet ﷺ] or should I turn my face to the Prophet ﷺ (and turn my back to the prayer niche)?” Imam Malikؒ replied: “(O caliph!) Why do you turn your face from theProphet ﷺ, as He ﷺ is the source of mediation for you & for your ancestor Adamؒ on the Day ofJudgement? Rather you should [pray & supplicate by] turning towards the Prophet ﷺ & seek Hisﷺ intercession so that He ﷺ intercedes for you before Allah ﷻ on the Day of Judgement.”Allah ﷻ has declared: “We sent not an apostle, but to be obeyed, inaccordance with the will of Allah. If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come untothee and asked Allahs forgiveness, & the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would havefound Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful”[4:64]This incident has been narrated by Qadi ‘Iyad in hisash-Shifa [2:596] with a sound chain of transmission. Besides, it has been related by a number of other traditionists of impeccable credibility. Imam Subki inShifa’-us-siqam fi ziyarat khayr-il-anam, Imam Samhudi in Khulasat-ul-wafa, Imam Qastallānī in al-Mawāhib-ul-laduniyyah, Ibn Jama‘ah in Hidāyat-us-salik and IbnHajar Haythamī in al-Jawhar-ul-munazzam.
