Fact Snack - Pasta may be nearly as old as the world (well, not quite but it sounds good), but pasta and meatballs is a new twist. Indeed, the Italians rarely ate meat. It was simply not as widely available, or affordable, as vegetarian food options. But this changed once they emigrated to the US, where meat was plentiful. 300,000 Italian immigrants were in the US by about 1880. It is here that they began incorporating more meat in their cooking. Spaghetti and meatballs was a logical next step... and a tasty one too!
