Fact of the day #Ramadan - Day 29 (probably the last one, apologies for the lengthiness. 3/4 of people converting to Islam today in Britain are women (mainly white Brits). Why? Historically, (and in many societies still today) women have been regarded as “second-class” citizens and are deprived of various basic rights enjoyed by the male population. In the West, there is a common misconception that Muslim women are “backwards” in a patriarchal society. Unfortunately, this assumption is based upon Arab/Indo/Pak culture, rather than Islam itself. Contrary to popular belief, Islam was in fact the first religion in history to grant women a status that was never known before, and promotes gender equality. This includes many rights that were only available to women in Western society in the last century or so, such as: the right to vote, the right to work, the right to wills, the right to economic power, the right to divorce, the right to marry whom they will etc. Nobody had to fight for their rights through any form of feminist revolution, rather the gender equality teachings of Islam were enforced amongst the people. The dignity, honour, respect and liberation of a woman in Islam cannot be found in any other faith-system, as it is in this religion (ready to debate this with anyone). Some of the greatest women in Islamic history: - the first person to accept Islam was Khadija (ra) - the first martyr in Islam was Sumaya (ra) - the greatest scholar of Islam in history is Aisha (ra) - the first original form of the Qur’an in writing was in possession of Hafsa (ra) - the greatest warrior ("better than any man" - prophet pbuh) was Umm ‘Umara “And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer - those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged, [even as much as] the speck on a date seed.” – Qur’an 4: 124
