Factors affecting differences in assimilation between Ukrainian immigrants in Canada and the United States / by Scott N. Contor. Publisher: 2012. Location: Main Book Collection (2nd Floor) Call Number: Y2012 .C65 Summary: The United States and Canada share many similarities. This thesis concerns itself with one noticeable difference. In Canada, Ukrainian immigrants and their descendants have formed and successfully maintained a unique Ukrainian-Canadian ethnic identity, whereas their counterparts in the United States have disappeared with the process of assimilation. Using John Stuart Mill’s logical method of difference, we may infer that differences between two otherwise similar countries are the causes of this difference in outcome. Aspects of Canadian and American history, likely to have influenced the immigration and assimilation stories of Ukrainian immigrants to North America are examined. The primary causal factors discussed in this thesis are the geographic isolation of Ukrainian settlements in Canada, a much more accepting multicultural attitude in Canada that contrasts sharply with strong American assimilation pressures, and the presence of a “color-line” mythology underpinning assimilation rhetoric in the United States.
