Facts? Who needs facts in the State of the Union? Written by Allen West on January 29, 2014 So let me just come out and say it. I see Obama as a pathological liar. Hardly a surprise, considering he was awarded the “Lie of the Year” for 2013. Obama is definitely keeping Washington Post Fact Checker, Glenn Kessler, in business. In fact, Kessler offered up these little morsels from last night. “The more than eight million new jobs our businesses have created over the past four years.” Yes, about 8 million jobs have been gained since the lowest point in 2010 but the number of jobs is still about 1.2 million lower than when the recession began in December 2007 – before he too office. I’m also amazed President Obama never addressed the real unemployment situation in America. He never mentioned all the Americans who have been forced to part-time employment, or simply no longer counted because they’ve stopped looking. We have the lowest workforce participation rate in 40 years. “A manufacturing sector that’s adding jobs for the first time since the 1990s.” Not really. The number of manufacturing jobs is still 500,000 fewer than when Obama took office. “Our deficits – cut by more than half.” The federal budget deficit has declined in half since 2009, from $1.3 trillion to about $600 billion. But remember, President Bush’s final deficit in 2008 was $458 billion, and that was with a Democrat House and Senate. Obama’s deficit of $1.3 trillion hit a high water mark after the $800 billion “stimulus” and there were other deficit years over a trillion. So it must be convenient to explode the deficit and then due to sequester cuts and higher tax revenues take credit for the reduction. “Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled.” Earlier this month, economists Raj Chetty, Emmanuel Saez and colleagues published a paper based on tens of millions of tax records showing the rate of upward mobility is essentially the same now as it was 20 years ago. But hey, even if failed economic policies have deepened inequality, nothing is ever this guy’s fault. “Today, women make up about half our workforce. But they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. That is wrong, and in 2014, it’s an embarrassment.” There is clearly a wage gap, but differences in the life choices of men and women — such as women tending to leave the workforce when they have children — make it difficult to make simple comparisons. I guess President Obama (and his speechwriters) enjoy watching Mad Men — but don’t they know it’s fiction? “More than nine million Americans have signed up for private health insurance or Medicaid coverage.” Wait a minute – 6.3 million of that is Medicaid and not necessarily as a result of Obamacare, and the remaining 3 million for private insurance is pretty iffy too. People are counted as enrolled if they select a plan – but the federal exchange hasn’t built the part of the system to know if they’ve actually paid. Sadly, he just can’t stop lying about his own signature achievement. You have to wonder, when the president reviews the draft of the speech, does he review each statistic? Or do he and his speechwriters just figure it’s ok to put in a few whoppers and nobody will notice? I guess they’re right. After all, America reelected him.
