Facts about the South Africa industry -Many DJs in SA, most are willing to play for free,in return killing business for those who charge booking fees. -DJs use compilations to get more bookings, it’s not about the music anymore,most are recycling songs. -New producers are giving away too many of their songs for free, without making any money from them. -Young producers are willing to sell their songs to big name DJs for compilations, without being credited (Selling their souls and intellectual property). -There are too many fly-by-night promoters, who think hosting an event is an easy way to make a quick buck. -Young producers think releasing an EP with an international label makes them superstars. After that they dont respect locally based music labes. -People want to be Artist Managers,most use it for street cred;to say they manage so and so, while the artist is suffering. -House Artist albums have more returns than DJ compilations, you pay no money to license songs. -Artists are starting their own record labels,majors are shrinking. -Mixing and mastering is no longer taken serious (killing the game). -DJs dont want to buy music, always asking for promos which is killing the producer. -Vocalist are not taken serious when they charge for recording. we have a lot of vocalists but less writers. -We no longer have investors or promoters pushing new talent, you have to push yourself as an artist.
