Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences invites you to the seminar entitled: Brunei Centre of GIS, Geomatics, Geocomputation, Data & Map Products by Dr Shaozhong Shi Date: Thursday, 13 November 2014 Time: 2.30 p.m Venue: FASS meeting room 2.94 Abstract The key aspects of related subject areas of GIS, Geomatics and Geocomputation are digital mapping, modeling, analysis, data and products. The field of GIS and Geomatics has been going through a period of renaissance and innovation. The field has been very dynamic internationally. The field is diversified and new areas of specialisation have formed. Maps have been one of the most important tools for visually communicating the knowledge of the world around us. GIS and Geomatics allow us to depict, analyse and visualise our world based on facts and data. In recent decades, there have been revolutionary advances in computerised geospatial technology, geodata (digital maps and images) and applications. The power of maps and images are undoubtedly useful. Any research and teaching involving spatial phenomena is inconceivable without maps and GIS. It is very important to gain transferable knowledge and skills by studying the subject. The subject has always been one of key fields of studies, when geographical or spatial phenomena are considered. It has been one of important fields of research and teaching internationally. There have been specialised sub-fields evolved from the core ideas of digital mapping and human endeavour in exploring the capabilities of digital mapping technologies in various ways. GeoComputation represents a conscious attempt to move the research agenda back to geographical analysis and modelling. It encompasses a wide spectrum of theoretical and applied research and teaching activities. In the world, Brunei is well known for its oil industry and the beauty of the tropical environment. Digital mapping, Remote Sensing (primarily a set of means for data collection), GIS/Geomatics, Geodatabase technologies, data, map products are pivotally important to the economic development and advancement of Brunei in research, teaching and sustainable economic development. The field of GIS and geomatics not only offer theoretical research and teaching, but also practical solutions and products. Geospatial solutions, algorithms, data and map products are very useful for research, teaching, governance and industry. Environmental applications of remote sensing, GIS, geomatics for natural resource management: tropical rainforests, forest management and habitat monitoring, mapping of a wide range of environmental factors (climate, geography/environment); landuse and land management, seabed mapping, coastal zone management and protection and etc. Oil industry, mapping, geodatabases, stratigraphical, lithological, calculation of oil reserves, 3D modeling and visualisation Business applications: survey data and census, application of postcodes for locating businesses and customers; Banking: mapping of customers and improvement of services and offering of products Country and place promotion: communicating geographical knowledge of Brunei to people in Brunei and internationally, contributing to the understanding of Brunei internationally. E-government: administration and cadastral mapping; public amenity and asset management Open Geographical Information Science, application and data development; data standards, quality, specifications Note: The scope of the seminar is intended to highlight and cover a wide range of topics for future development. The format of the seminar. All are welcome!
