Faculty shortage is a serious problem in IITs, NITs and all other - TopicsExpress

Faculty shortage is a serious problem in IITs, NITs and all other engineering colleges. This is largely because government policy of expecting faculty to have high qualification and experience while their salaries are not more than pea nuts when compared to what they would get from Industry. May be even then faculty with PhD in engineering who are passionate about pedagogy might come to teaching -but even that is not happening because most private colleges are run by the vested interests for reasons other than imparting quality education and in such institutions there would invariably be a ring of unscrupulous people who would feel threatened if any learned man with passion for teaching arrives. This Bangalore Mirror article seeks to bring out deficiencies in VTU affiliated colleges. Probably Sridhar Vivan needs to apply under RTI to VTU and obtain copies of inspection reports of LIC of VTU in last 5 years along with compliance reports filed by each of the engineering colleges. Then it would be interesting to note how many colleges were allowed affiliation despite repeated adverse remarks by LIC. Corrupt practices existed when Balaveera Reddy was the VC and they exist now. The problems at VTU needs to be seen beyond the prism of ego clash between Reddy and Maheshappa. It is unfortunate that Siddaramaiah government did not nominate a new VC. Balaveera Reddy would want someone close to him as the next VC since he himself is chairman of governing council of many engineering colleges. Do all the colleges with him at the helm follow all norms? Almost all engineering and medical colleges are run by politicians in Karnataka. And it becomes as much difficult for VTU and the government to impose any rule strictly on them. Parents are anxious to get a BE/MBBS seat and pay hefty money to get admission to colleges with no decent faculty, no labs run by politicians who have no sense of responsibility.
