Failed £17 million Arsenal target sent off, but at least he won’t have to sing … yet Luiz Gustavo had an absolute mare for VfL Wolfsburg this afternoon, but he might have got out of his dreaded initiation. Arsenal were widely derided recently for their continued impotency in the transfer market, after Luiz Gustavo decided to join VfL Wolfsburg as Arsenal pondered whether to make a move for the player. In the end, it would not have mattered whether they met the £17 million asking price and offered him a bumper wage packet - as Gustavo’s main reason for his switch to Wolfsburg was a desire to remain in Germany. Last week, as Arsenal toiled against Aston Villa - Gustavo was the man-of-the-match as his new team thrashed Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga. But, a week later, and things have changed. Arsenal romped to victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage, while Wolfsburg were beaten 2-0 by Mainz in the Bundesliga - and the game was not one to remember for the Brazilian international. The former Bayern Munich man was to blame for the first goal, after losing his man at the corner. That man was Eric Choupo-Moting, who then smashed the ball home to make it 1-0 Mainz. Then, just four minutes later, things went from bad to worse for the holding midfielder. His trip saw him issued a second bookable offence, and he went for an early bath. While he was off the pitch, Mainz added another via Nicolai Muller - and the defeat was confirmed. But let’s look on the bright-side here. This morning it was reported in German paper Bild that Gustavo had not yet done his initiation for his new club - and it was scheduled in for this evening, after the Mainz game. The initiation is a popular one with professional football clubs, Gustavo would have to stand up in front of his new team-mates … and sing a song. It was not something Gustavo was looking forward to, as he openly admitted his aversion to his own singing voice. But the initiation would only go ahead if Wolfsburg won, which they didn’t. But we still reckon Gustavo was up in front of his team-mates this evening singing a song … as a punishment rather than initiation.
