Fair work boosts productivity, creates jobs and is the best route out of poverty for individuals and families all across Scotland, Cabinet Secretary for Training, Youth and Women’s Employment Angela Constance said recently as she set out plans to tackle inequality in the workplace. Speaking during a Scottish Government debate on progressive working policies, the Cabinet Secretary said Scotland’s distinctive approach to the labour market was making progress, with falling unemployment and record female employment, but more needed to be done to support diversity and equality in the workplace. Ms Constance said Scottish Government support for the living wage, improved industrial relations and plans for a Fair Work Convention would ensure sustainable growth that helped everyone to realise their potential, as she called for cross-party consensus on the Working Together Review chaired by former enterprise minister Jim Mather. And she repeated the Scottish Government’s call for power to set the minimum wage to be devolved to Scotland, highlighting growing support for wider employment policy to be placed in the hands of the Scottish Parliament alongside fiscal and welfare powers.
