#Fairfield CT- State Representative Tony Hwang along with Fairfield’s 1st responders (Fairfield Fire and Police Department) held an informational press conference on the use of Naloxone by front-line 1st responders in combating Heroin (opiate) overdose. Representative Hwang along with Fairfield 1st responders worked with the Dept. of Public Health Commissioner Jewel Mullen, legislative and medical advisors to allow all trained first responders to carry Naloxone – commonly known as Narcan, a non-addictive drug that binds to and blocks opiate receptors, temporarily reversing the effects of heroin overdose. Under current CT state statute and regulations, only skilled paramedics are authorized to carry NARCAN, thereby limiting a critical tool for Fire and Police 1st responders in saving lives. Two hundred fifty-seven people in Connecticut died from heroin-related overdoses last year, up from 174 in 2012, according to the state’s Chief Medical Examiner’s office.
