Faith Faith is a very important concept in the Bible which, unfortunately, is the least most understood. What is faith? Is faith mere wishful thinking? Is it being optimistic about something? or Is it to believe? Let’s find out what the Bible says; “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” Hebrews 11:1 Consider the words: “the evidence of things not seen”. This statement implies that faith gives tangibility to your hope. This definition in itself doesn’t completely explain the concept of faith but at least it gives you an overview of faith. Faith is Action Faith is far not wishful thinking neither is it simply believing something; it is the response of the human-spirit to the Word of God. Let’s go through a few passages in the Bible that explains further: “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? “Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? “Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? “And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” James 2:17-24, 26. From the passages above, it is clear that faith isn’t the same as belief (even the demons believe and tremble), it is much more than that. Faith is the response of the human spirit to the Word of God; it is a leap on the Word of God. Abraham believed in God but he didn’t stop there, he demonstrated his faith in God’s word by acting on it. He willing gave up his son to God and damned the consequences — that’s faith! He knew that could raise his son even if he died. Faith is not hoping God can, it is no He will! Faith without action, is no faith at all! As a Christian, you must be willing to act on the Word of God irrespective of the circumstances. You must be willing to prove your trust in God as the author and finisher of your faith. You must be willing to show Him how much you love him by faith in Him for “without faith, it is impossible to please God…” Hebrews 11:6
