Faith into Action *SEEKING SPIRIT* December 1 Whether humility is a virtue or arrogance is an evil must be judged in terms of the circumstances under which they appear. When we confront evil, we need a forcefulness that may verge on arrogance to point out, attack and correct the injustices evil breeds, just as the Gosho instructs. This is the stance the courageous take in the struggle for justice; therein lies true humility. The most fundamental thing is to have a sense of humility toward the Law and toward truth. It is to our own benefit to advance along the path of faith with sincere humility and a boundless seeking mind. The greater our seeking spirit, the greater the fortune we gain and the stronger and happier we become. (2/16/92) A vibrant seeking spirit is the very wellspring of Buddhism; the prime point of faith. It is also the great path of the SGI. A person of seeking spirit is always youthful, always full of joy, always vigorous. People with seeking minds humbly examine themselves and strive to develop their lives. Through such efforts, they can develop great character. A genuine Buddhist and genuine member of the SGI always lives vibrantly and continually advances through life with a seeking mind. (4/23/94) The moment we forget to have a humble seeking mind and instead come to see ourselves as intrinsically great, our ruin begins. This is as true of leaders in the organization as it is of people with social status. (5/3/94) Buddhism teaches that truly excellent people can learn from everyone, even those on lower levels of development, and they should respect such people, regarding them as their teachers. ( 2/23/90) I hope you will always have the spirit to learn with a lively curiosity and interest. When leaders are enthusiastic to keep learning and growing, they inspire others, assuming an air of superior wisdom, let us always strive for greater understanding and insight into all manner of things, so that we continue learning together and spur one another to grow further. This is the kind of spirit I cherish. (4/19/97) Thoughts on Selected Topics by Daisaku Ikeda
