Faith is having a pretty good day. Still gets wheezy & has a nasty cough, but her condition did not worsen as they were all expecting it to. Were hoping we are on the mend now. Still another day or two at least in the hospital to make sure shes fully recovered from a respiratory standpoint. Now our goals are all about her feedings. They decided to change out her button to a different one that takes up less room in her stomach, this will make room for her to be able to get larger volumes of food without all the gagging and retching. Thats their theory anyways.... They restarted her continuous feedings today at 5 ml/hr (1tsp) and are increasing it by 2 ml/hr every 2 hrs until she is able to get back to her full volumes of feeding that shes supposed to be on. When they got to 10 ml/hr she started wrenching again, so we hooked her up to the syringe to vent her (shes using a Ferrell bag, so we shouldnt even have to vent her) and restarted at 10. If she continues wretching they will shut the feeds off again & try tomorrow. She has her IV for hydration still in case her feedings dont go well. They also restarted a medication that she was on while in the NICU to help her tolerate her feeds better. The hope is that she wasnt tolerating her foods because of the virus coming on and now that her condition is improving she will begin to tolerate them again. If for some reason she doesnt tolerate her feedings then theyve given us another option that she could go home with, it will just make things a little busier for her, but as long as she does well with it & doesnt feel miserable. Her weight was down to 12#9oz, which I think is what she weighed the day we left NICU 2 1/2 wks ago. At her appt on the 19th she was 12#14, then she starting having problems with her feedings several days after that. Her admission wt was 13 and shes down from Friday. I never wouldve guessed it would be her feedings keeping us from going home. Even though shes not back to herself yet she is staying awake for longer periods & giving us lots of smiles :-)
