Faithfood for the Faithful April 15, 2014 Holy Tuesday Readings: Isaiah 49: 1-6; Psalm 71: 1-6, 15, 17; John 13: 21-33, 36-38 Insights: IT WAS NIGHT Bro. Rolan Banting, SOWER The Holy Tuesday Gospel begins with the narration of John that Jesus was “deeply disturbed” because one of His friends will betray Him. “Even my trusted friend on whom I relied, who shared my table takes advantage of me” (Ps. 41:10; cf. Ps 55:13-15). According to Pope Benedict XVI (Jesus of Nazareth), the act of Judas’ betrayal is beyond psychological explanation. “Anyone who breaks friendship with Jesus, casting off His easy yoke, does not attain liberty, does not become free, but succumbs to other powers.” St. John narrates in verse 30, “It was night”: the betrayer now lives in darkness. He no longer sees that Jesus is the light that can never be conquered by darkness (Jn. 1:5). That is why he tried to save himself by returning the money to those who commissioned him (Mt. 27: 3-5), instead of relying on the grace of forgiveness. His remorse was unable to hope (1 Tim. 1:1) for he sees only himself and his darkness. Prayer: Lord Jesus, we are sorry for making You deeply disturbed. Grant us the grace to always rely on Your mercy and friendship. As we partake in Your Table (Eucharist), free us from the slavery of “the night.” Amen.
