Fall Prevention Training Outreach Worker Position to begin as soon as possible Brazilian Immigrant Center (BIC), Allston, Massachusetts 02134 BIC does organizing, advocacy and training to reduce marginalization of Brazilian and Latino immigrants, promoting their engagement as workers and civic participants. Primarily a worker’s center, we support and defend workers’ rights under current state and US labor laws. An important part of this mission over the past decade has been offering OSHA-approved safety and health training to workers in the construction industry. Deadline – Applications will be accepted until the position is filled Position Description. The Outreach Worker is responsible for outreach, identification, and recruitment of trainees for BIC’s Susan Harwood program in Targeted Training in Fall Prevention for Construction. Our target audience is Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking immigrant construction workers from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, and small business employers and supervisors, who have not before received such workplace safety training. Working with the BIC outreach coordinators in Boston MA and Bridgeport CT, the Outreach Worker will also interview relevant industry participants, examine OSHA accident data to identify problem areas, and schedule and manage focus groups, in order to conduct needs assessments to clarify where BIC training can be most productively focused, and to identify particular areas for targeted outreach efforts. Job Duration. The position will end on September 30, 2015, with the possibility of a one-year renewal, pending continuing grant funding for the program. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Recruitment and registration of 390 trainees for Fall Prevention trainings to occur during the January 1-September 30, 2015 period. This means recruitment of 13 trainees per week for the 30 training weeks of the program. • Teamwork with other BIC staff – The Outreach Worker must collaborate on an ongoing basis with other BIC staff, including the Executive Director who is the Susan Harwood Project Director, and the Outreach Coordinators at the Boston and Bridgeport offices. This involves regular meetings and coordination. • Maintaining telephone and travel contacts, in the four-state target zone, with relevant industry participants, including labor unions, state and local government officials, company owners, and workers’ centers. JOB REQUIREMENTS • Commitment to BIC’s mission, vision, & values including racial and economic justice, and self-awareness practices. • Good familiarity and/or direct experience with the construction industry. • Portuguese language competence a must • Spanish language competence also preferred • Excellent people and relationship building skills • Availability of a car, and US drivers’ license, for travel into the field in four New England states. Position information, work schedule This position is a 20-hour per week part-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position requires travel as well as working some weekends.
