Fall descends on Kentucky, an enchanted season of festivity and nostalgia. It is a moment breathtaking in its fleeting beauty, a time to celebrate in thanksgiving for what is and has been, a season pregnant with the mysterious certainty that all things must pass. . . . Many seasons have come and gone since five young men banded together over a love of music, forging a fellowship which has proven to be uncannily strong and vibrant. These years have seen many high points, redemption in the wake of personal loss, a swelling tide of accomplishments, many happy memories—and more than a few hijinks! After four records, hundreds of shows, and thousands of hours spent in each others company, its unclear which is the greater surprise: that we ever made it this far, or that we still think the world of each other and truly enjoy hanging out. Looking back, its always been the latter which has made everything else possible, and which has made this journey so much fun. And so it is with more than a little bit of nostalgia that we share this news: following our performances this month and next, the 23 String Band will not be playing again anytime soon. Well call it an indefinite hiatus, since for the foreseeable future we will not be accepting bookings or planning any shows. The time has come for each of us to pursue interests outside the 23 String Band: interests which include educational careers, business opportunities, and new musical endeavors. This has not been an easy decision, nor quick in the making. We remain friends, and we continue to enjoy playing music with each other. But for some time now, life has been guiding the five of us in different directions—to use the term in both a geographical and metaphorical sense. And so we have resolved to go out on a high note, thankful for the many people who have helped make this such an exciting and fulfilling journey. You know who you are! We hope to see many of you at our upcoming shows, including Fridays International Bluegrass Music Museum fundraiser, Saturdays St Louis Folk and Roots Festival, and culminating with Steamboat Days and Centennial Festival of Riverboats in October. In the meantime, lets raise a toast: to fall—to good times—and to new beginnings!
