Fall frolic Fall weather is great for walking. Temperatures in warmer climates have finally cooled, while colder areas aren’t yet fighting frost. So take advantage of October — the perfect time for walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week. You can also try some other fun and active fall outings, such as: Go hiking or biking. Hit nature trails to enjoy the fall foliage. Boost accountability by planning excursions with a friend or family member. Rake and clean. This season’s chores — raking leaves, pulling weeds, and mowing — can give you a good workout. Hit fall events. Meander through a corn maze, pumpkin patch, apple orchard, or craft festival to celebrate the harvest while doing something active. Organize a football game. Gather family, co-workers, or your favorite pals for a flag or touch football game. Get outside and make the most of this ideal season for outdoor activity. Overcoming late-night eating It doesn’t matter when you walk. Morning, noon, or night, aim for 30 minutes of walking, five days a week to reap the health benefits. For weight control, when you eat doesn’t matter as much as total calories. But evening snacks can make weight control difficult because, unlike meals — which have a set beginning and end — they’re often paired with other pastimes such as watching TV, playing video games, or reading. This makes it easy to eat and drink more than you realize because you’re not paying attention. As a result of a full stomach that’s busy digesting, you may not sleep well. The next day you may feel tired, slow, and low energy — and you probably won’t be hungry for breakfast. Break the habit today. Here’s how: Balance. Make sure you’re eating balanced meals during the day. Re-focus. Stay busy when you’re most vulnerable — go for a walk, do dishes, fold laundry, build model airplanes, work a puzzle, read. Limit TV. Cut back on evening TV and/or screen time. Remove snacks. Keep processed snack foods out of your kitchen; if you’re truly hungry, reach for an apple or baby carrots. Get fresh. Brush your teeth or take a swig of mouthwash immediately following your evening meal. Avoid late-night snacking to help you maintain a healthy weight, enjoy a good breakfast, and keep your energy levels and mood high.
