Fall returns to the northern hemisphere tonight at 10:29p! To our friends in the southern hemisphere, theyll mark the arrival of Spring. The Fall & Spring equinox mark the 2 days of the year when the Sun rises due East and sets due West. For us in the north, the Sun begins rising south of east and setting south of west. The net effect to us of course is that our nights become longer and our days shorter. As the Sun continues its southern migration, the temperatures cool and serve to remind us that Winter is on our horizon. The Sun will reach its southern most point on the Winter solstice when it will begin its journey north and the cycle repeats! All because our Earths rotation axis is tilted 23.5degrees! This cosmic dance has been going on for ~4.5 billion years. Our ancestors built elaborate structures to monitor the Suns journey; effectively creating a calendar! Many cultures had ceremonies attached to days like these as a scientific explanation for the pattern they observed was lacking. For me, this date always serves to remind that the hockey season is about to begin! :)
