Falls Church, VA-Early Thursday morning, September 12, 2013, Ernest Eugene Turner suddenly, with little notice to his wife, departed this life. His family and friends had no time to say goodbye, only to weep and trust that God knew why. He lived a full life that promised much more; being suddenly gone was much too soon. Born March 7, 1948 in Winchester, VA to the late Patsy Turner Johnson & the late Theodore Roosevelt Turner; and largely nurtured by his late grandmother; Rebecca Colbert of Millwood, VA. Called "Gene" by family and childhood friends, he was a very active sports minded child. He attended Johnson and Williams High School (Berryville, VA) and at the early age of 13; became the football quarterback. Gene was an all-around sports enthusiast and played on the basketball team as well. He received his school letters for his outstanding sportsmanship and athletics in both basketball and football in 1962-1963. The Winchester Evening Star Herald, a local newspaper awarded him "Outstanding All Area Player" for both basketball and football in 1966 Group II State Tournaments through the Virginia Scholastic Association, and later became All-District in baseball as well. Because of his athletic achievements he was selected and inducted into Clarke County (VA) Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. He was currently on the selection committee for the last three years. After high school Gene attended Shenandoah Community College and later transferred to George Mason University in Fairfax, VA where again he played basketball and where he earned his surname "Ernie Turner" that would follow him for the rest of his life. Working at a Northern VA Country Club making extra money while in school and after graduation, Ernie developed his favorite past time of golfing and over the years became quite good at it (from statements made from some of his buddies.) Most recently Ernie got the chance of a lifetime: winning an opportunity to chip with golf great Tiger Woods. He was the envy of his circle but still loved. Ernie sustained several injuries over the years, but it never stopped him. So he continued his past time of golfing and when that was not available he could be found coaching ladies softball games. He was inducted as a Manager to the "Washington Metropolitan Slow Pitch" Hall of Fame for his ladies softball team in 1988. (Gene/Ernie) loved family gatherings-he enjoyed baking and showing off his pumpkin bread and his famous pineapple-upside down cake that he started baking when he was a teenager. Rosie refused to be a golf widow, so she took up the sport herself and was able to spend more time with her husband doing what they both enjoyed. Ernie had several jobs over the years; Giant Food Inc., Frito Lay, and most recently the Herndon Police Department. He leaves behind his lovely wife of 20 years, Rosie Turner of Falls Church, VA, and one daughter Tammy Chisholm (Dan) and five grandchildren, Sarah Ann (4), Cassidy (14), Amanda (16), Ryan (17), and Becca (18). Two sisters-Doris Green of Millwood, VA; Minister Patricia Trim of Washington, DC; two brothers-George Turner (Eva) of Ft. Washington, MD; Pastor James Turner of Brandywine, MD. An older brother (Buddy Turner) and sister (Rosetta Jackson) preceded him in death.
