Family fun at The Fountains Santa Prepares for a Very Cold War By Jocelynn Smith, Managing Editor The next battle ground isn’t going to be in Eastern Europe. And it isn’t going to be in Iran, Israel, Gaza or Afghanistan either. No, the next war is about to be waged on the doorstep of Santa’s grotto. As if the world isn’t unstable enough, Russia and several other countries have now set their sights on the North Pole — and all have claimed sovereignty over an unpopulated, freezing, mostly underwater block of ice on which the Earth’s axis meets the surface of the Northern Hemisphere. Earlier this week, Denmark became the first country to formally stake a claim over part of the North Pole. Canada, which also lays claim to this icy and barren piece of land in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, could soon follow in Denmark’s footsteps and submit its own claim as soon as it completes research. Trouble is clearly brewing. In 2007, the Russians staked their claim after a submarine planted a Russian flag beneath the North Pole. As it happens, the North Pole is set to become the next hot spot for resources. Beneath the North Pole lies an estimated 30% of the world’s undiscovered gas and 13% of the world’s undetected oil. Of course, it doesn’t help that tensions are running high with Russia, which is seemingly eager to start a fight with anyone who wants one. A Russian military aircraft recently came close to a collision with a passenger plane from Copenhagen, Denmark. Now, the country has ramped up its military presence in the Arctic, causing further strife with competing nations. If a new battle must be fought, the North Pole is a smart location. There is a smaller chance of innocent bystanders being killed and little chance of property damage (Although we do sympathize with the plight of all those elves). Sadly though, if Denmark and Russia stage a fight over the North Pole, more are going to be drawn in, because Canada, Norway and the United States have borders on the region as well. The lines on the globe are shifting. Geopolitical fighting and growing uncertainty around the world creates opportunities. The Sovereign Society will continue to provide independent research on the best ways to protect your freedom and your lifestyle as the world constantly changes. And as the fight for the North Pole heats up, it might be a good time for Santa Claus to start looking at some foreign real estate.
