Family is Threatened After Controversial Dog Death Even though no charges are filed, the Chiefland Police are becoming more and more involved in this case as the Gerald Family fears for their safety. It all started on Sunday when Rick Gerald says a neighborhood dog came onto his property for the third time. He says it was aggressive toward his male dog, his daughter, future son-in-law, and granddaughter. Gerald says he grabbed a machete he was using to clear branches from his fence. He used the knife to hit the dog in the head. Geralds daughter says, That was him thinking on instinct and thinking to protect his family and his grand-daughter to what he thought was best. To keep my step-daughter from being at the hospital with stitches, or from stopping me from being at the hospital with stitches, or my fiance for that matter The dog, named Mason, was able to travel home where his owners, Adam and Ashlie Cowart say the dog had a seizure, leading them to shoot him to relieve his misery. Since the incident, the Gerald Family has received many threats through social media and over the phone: I want his address please. I have a few dogs I want him to meet and a loaded 22. The way I understand the law is you have the right to protect you and your livestock. But you have to prove you were in harms way. I would put that prick in a cage and let a few pits attack him and then send him down the street to die. I want to kill the guy that did that. Geralds daughter asked to remain anonymous and says these threats and comments dont stop at the Internet. She says going to school has gotten tough. I get stared at by everybody--and its not just the students... teachers, office staff.. and I dont think thats right, you know? The Gerald Family has notified the Chiefland Police and provided hard-copies of the threats. Officers say they will not tolerate the threats and will be keeping a close watch over the Geralds home. According to Robert Douglas, Chiefland Chief of Police, If they threaten these people. and have the means to carry that threat out, me and my people will put them in jail. Geralds daughter says she was already planning on moving out of state to join her fiance, however because of these threats, is making that move within the next week. mygtn.tv/story/23772759/family-is-threatened-after-controversial-dog-death
