Family isnt always blood. Its the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile & who love you no matter what. We used to teach in the same school until fate led us to different paths. She transferred to another school near her place. On the other hand, I was left behind and eventually opted to get out of teaching after 15 years in the public school. Over the years , the tie that binds us remains strong. That special friendship has been extended to my girls and to her own children as well. We never fail to go to her upland place in San Mateo despite the distance that my children and I have to go through via public transport. The distance doesnt bother us a bit.The warm welcome accorded to us takes away our exhaustion because of the long travel. Consequently, the palates of my girls have acquired the taste of mouth-watering dishes like ginatang bilo-bilo, lumpiang hubad, etc.especially prepared for us. Such specialty of our hosts house have become my childrens favorite and are more than enough to entice them to go with me. (I admit, I couldnt prepare those like she does.) More than the sumptuous homemade dishes that we go to is the special bond we share. Her home has become like a second home away from the city. Her friends and relatives have become familiar faces to us. In a way, we have expanded our horizon. Mrs. Arceli Vergara, a former Science teacher of Don Alejandro Roces Sr. Science Technology High School, is the lady I am referring here. (Sadly, she has no fb account. Another reason why we have to see her personally so as to keep in touch.) :) Yes, we are not related by blood. However, Mommy Cely has a special place in our hearts. Now that she has retired from teaching, we wish her nothing but the best journey ahead. :) :) :)
