Family of Oktaha girl with genetic disorder plans benefit run Posted: Sunday, October 26, 2014 11:15 pm The York family of Oktaha searched for years for a diagnosis, and now they are helping the Glut1 Deficiency Foundation search for a cure. Allen and April York are spearheading their second annual 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run on Nov. 15 to benefit the foundation. The Glut1 Deficiency Foundation, a volunteer, nonprofit family organization, is dedicated to funding and supporting researchers, educating others about Glut1 Deficiency and increasing awareness of the syndrome. Oktaha Schools will join with the York family to sponsor the event beginning at 10 a.m. at the elementary building. Registration is open at glut1.eventbrite, or register the day of the race beginning at 8 a.m. A $20 entry fee before Nov. 7 includes a free T-shirt. Medals will be awarded in 10 age groups. A benefit bean luncheon will follow the race in the Oktaha Schools cafeteria. The Yorks’ younger daughter, 8-year-old Abby, was diagnosed with Glut1 (Glucose Transporter Type 1) Deficiency Syndrome when she was 6. The diagnosis came after many years of doctors’ visits and misdiagnoses. Adhering to a very strict diet, Abby has made much developmental progress in two years. Abby is one of just 600 people worldwide with Glut1, but there are thought to be thousands more that are misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. Glut1 Deficiency Syndrome is a genetic disorder that impairs brain metabolism. For information on the Glut1 Deficiency Foundation: G1DFoundation.org.
