Family thanks for the Condolence Messages and Support on the Occasion of the passing away on 7 June, 2014, at 98 years old, of MaMbeki, Epainette ‘Piny’ Mamotseki Nomaka Mbeki. Sincere thanks from the Mbeki and Moerane Families: To the thousands of friends and sympathisers in South Africa, throughout Africa and the rest of the World, who sent very welcome Condolence Messages. Our Mother and Aunt, Epainette ‘Piny’ Mamotseki Nomaka Mbeki, passed away peacefully at St Dominics Hospital in East London, South Africa, on June 7, 2014. She was the last member of the generation of our parents. Her departure has communicated the painful but unavoidable truth that a valiant pioneer generation of whom we are immensely proud, has virtually ceased to exist, except perhaps for the 102-year-old Mama Rebecca Kotane, revolutionary militant and wife of our late esteemed leader, Moses Kotane. We have no doubt that we were blessed that her husband, our Father and Uncle, Govan, and her brothers and sisters and brothers and sisters-in-law, our late parents, and others close to her whom she had lost, were with us and the peoples of the world in spirit as we gathered in our thousands at Ngcingwane Village to bid her our final farewell! We confirm that happily she died peacefully after only thirteen days since she was admitted to the hospital suffering from respiratory problems. Thus, having walked on her own into the Hospital, she passed away without having to endure a long period of painful and humiliating suffering. Before her death, she cheerfully told us and others of our friends close to her that her age dictated that her time to depart the world of the living had come! She passed away at 02.30 hrs on Saturday, June 7. As we parted with her during the night of Friday, June 6, she was still in a jovial mood, sending us off with her usual laughter and smile. Thus, knowing that her time had come to say farewell to all of us and all our people whom she loved, she communicated the inspiring message that we should not mourn her passing, remembering that she had sent us off with her accustomed smile and laughter! We have been overwhelmed by the warm written and oral condolence messages we have received from thousands of South Africans, other fellow Africans and many friends from the rest of the world. We have also been moved by the thousands of messages posted in the electronic media, including on the individual media websites, as well as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. In this regard, we humbly thank the media at home and abroad for what it did most honourably to report to millions across the globe about who MaMbeki was and what she stood for, as well as what South Africa and the rest of the world did to give her the dignified farewell she so richly deserved. We were also deeply moved to be joined by the thousands who convened at Ngcingwane Village at Dutywa on 14 June as we prepared and took our Mother and Aunt to her final resting place, many of whom had taken the trouble earlier personally to call on us to convey their condolences, support and friendship. Hereby we convey our heartfelt and sincere thanks to everybody we have mentioned, who used all available means to share with us their feeling of loss at the departure of MaMbeki and honest appreciation of a long life well spent in the service of the people. We decided to communicate this message through the media and other contemporary electronic means out of genuine respect for the thousands who communicated their views about our late Mother and Aunt. We have done this because we are concerned that practically it will not be possible for us to respond personally to the many thousands who conveyed truly inspiring and very welcome messages of support. Humbly, we trust that all who did what they could to communicate these messages to us, from current Heads of State and Government to ordinary citizens from everywhere in South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world, will accept this public communication as truly our own heartfelt family message of thanks to all of them. We have been strengthened the better to bear our loss because we came finally and genuinely to understand what our Mother and Aunt meant for the greater humanity, well beyond our immediate family, which she loved so dearly. We are privileged to confirm to all the peoples of the world to whom she devoted her life that, indeed, she rests in peace! Thabo Mbeki and Marumo Moerane, on behalf of the Mbeki and Moerane families. 24 June, 2014.
