Fan Question!! I have a question that maybe you or your fans might help me with. I live in south eastern Ohio in an area not known for bears, even though some of the surrounding counties a little to the north have had sightings. Anyways, I took my son on a hike today scouting for the upcoming whitetail archery season and took these photos. I assumed the one was a rub and the other maybe a gouge mark. After returning home, I reflected on it and now question them. A few weeks ago, something got into our trash barrels by the road and it was loud enough to wake me. The area is somewhat lit by our nearby dusk to dawn light. When I stepped outside, it (whatever it was) ran like a scalded dog but was bigger, rounder in shape and dark in color (it was night). Then I remembered stepping in what I thought was deer dung. It was tubular but not much else I could make of it after stepping in it lol. And it was quite mushy. This happened just prior to coming upon these marks. Now, the large one does appear to be a rub but after looking closely, there are thick shreds laying at the base of the tree, not fine, rolled slivers and the tree itself was a mess. The other tree is rough barked, not typical of a rub tree, and only 4 ft from the other. Both are probably 6 around or bigger. So I ask, do I have an aggressive mature buck or possibly a bear? I only ask because weve never seen bear here and Id sure like to know when I head out on the 27th lol. Thanks!
