Fan reaction to all this Star Wars canon news fascinates me. I sympathize with those whove invested thousands of dollars and hours in deep-diving into the Expanded Universes lore and stories. These folks deep understanding of a beloved place is super-important to them. The revised canon, whatever it might be, threatens that understanding, expertise, etc. These fans have every right to feel confused and anxious. I deeply appreciate and respect the power of fandom. Fandom does amazing things. It changes lives—both of consumers and creators. It gets previously-unwanted books into print. :) But I gotta say, the Lucasfilm Story Group is doing the right thing. A thorough evaluation of the burgeoning SW canon—with presumably an eye for keeping/revising/adapting whats great, ditching what isnt, and coming up with entirely new stuff—is precisely what the universe needs to become approachable (and perhaps even understandable) again to less enthusiastic fans. As a consumer, I stopped engaging in non-movie Star Wars entertainment long ago. The EU stories quality varied wildly, but it was the goddamned continuity—the impossibly dense and seemingly convoluted canon—that created the greatest barrier of entry for me. I couldnt keep up, and then didnt want to. A streamlined or newcomer-friendly canon might actually appeal to me, and get my business. As a creator, itll be damned cool to see what a fresh approach might generate, and study it. I want to see what works and what doesnt. Id give damned-near anything to be a part of that Story Group. :D
