Fancy Farm 2014: Prelude to a Retirement Party; US Senate Race is Focus - down ticket races hold key to Kys future ================= This was my 6th/7th Fancy Farm kickoff to the Fall political season. It was by far the largest, and perhaps far reaching in terms of its lasting impact on the state. Challenger Alison Grimes let it be known in no uncertain terms the people of Kentucky dont appreciate Mitch McConnell dodging her and the debates which are doubtful they will have. She laid down a litany of issues important to Kentuckians that his votes prove McConnell DOESNT CARE (D.C.) about -- equal pay for women; coal, student debt, etc. Vowing to hold him accountable for his record, Alison Grimes had the majority Democrat crowd feeling -- knowing -- this Fancy Farm was a retirement party in the making! Down ticket Dem candidates certainly hope the Grimes appeal doesnt wash off in the overnight West Kentucky mist. Their fates, in several instances, rest on her skirt-tail; her ability to bolster up a Party which, at least in this part of the state, is a shadow of its former self.... In the balance could be the answers to questions of whether Ky will continue having a divided General Assembly; whether Dems can stop the bleeding in both Chambers; whether a cushion can be built up in the House; and whether any number of policy issues will make it to the Governors desk in the upcoming legislative session -- or not. For their part, Republicans appeared comfortable running against the President as much as they addressed current issues in their individual races. Its as if Kentuckians hate the President enough to sink all Dems under the weight of his alleged war on coal... A key, nearly disastrous moment occurred as Ag Commissioner James Comer (Republican) came within seconds of being over his time limit as he struggled to get out his announcement that he will be a candidate for Governor.
