Fancy an Icelandic Adventure at Moulton College? Senior Lecturer Dr James Littlemore has this week safely returned from trekking the mountains on and around the famous Laugavegur trail in SW Iceland. In challenging terrain featuring precipitous climbs, glacial river crossings and ever in the shadow of the active Eyjafjallajökull volcano James and colleague Chris Taylor from Lancaster University had the opportunity to sample the true Icelandic wilderness by working with Brathay Exploration Trust. Over the week they were there, James and Chris met with Chas Goemans and Dr Hreinn Oscarsson of the Icelandic Forest Service, Dr Rannveig Olafsdottir of the University of Iceland and Dr Micael Runnstrom of Lunds University in Sweden to try and piece together a possible expedition available to UK University students to run in the first instance from the summer of 2015. Likely to feature challenging hikes, wild camping, climbing, practical trail restoration at dizzying heights and ecological research with interested scientists participants would be based around the glacial ridge of Thorsmork (or ‘Thor’s Wood’). You can learn more about the expedition here: brathayexploration.org.uk/features/meets-recces/1051-iceland-recce. So if you fancy an exciting challenge, why not get involved? Better still, why not enrol on one of our exciting courses to learn about the great outdoor? We offer a range of full and part time options in countryside management, wildlife conservation and sports (outdoor adventure). See our web-site for details!
