Fantastic, another 33 minute phone call to the Dept of Revenue - TopicsExpress

Fantastic, another 33 minute phone call to the Dept of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division to try and acquire the title to a trailer that we hauled off a site and had never been titled. They rejected the Title Bond and application paperwork. Their cover letter requests a title bond for the correct amount of $12,000. Seriously? It is a 15 year old trailer. After much discussion over half an hour with the lady, she could not explain why they want a $12,000 title bond. She said that since my bond says $6,000, they now require double the fair market value of the vehicle, thus $12,000. I then pointed out that the form does not show the FMV, but the amount of the bond. She said they are using my bond amount as the FMV. I then questioned that if I return the form with a $12,000 bond, they may again ask for double that amount, or a $24,000 bond. I pointed out that nowhere on the forms do they ask for a Fair Market Value to then double. I explained that my insurance company and I decided the value on this 15 year old trailer is probably $3,000, so they doubled that and I paid for a $6,000 bond. The lady could not help me out much. She said I could supply a copy of the sale, but I again pointed out that there was no sale, it was abandoned. I asked what I needed to provide to show the FMV, and she did not know. I again said that no where on the State forms does it ask for a FMV, so they simply are wanting a doubled amount of the bond I already purchased. She said I could maybe write a cover letter and state the FMV and explain again how I acquired it. I asked if I should just get on Craigslist and print a trailer for sale that is similar to this one. She said that might work. This process has been a complete mess going back over 3 months. I had 5 different trips to DeKalbs tag office, because each time I went, I would get someone different and they would pull out a different form, or want something else stamped, signed or notarized and I would have to leave again. I just spent 30 minutes of my morning on the phone explaining it and she wasnt even sure that what she was suggesting would work, but I should try it. Stephen, does this sound correct, or can you point me in another more helpful direction?
