Faraz Minooei & the Traditional Persian Music Ensemble at UCLA Perform Traditional & Contemporary Persian Music. Sat. November 23rd, 8:00 pm Jan Popper Theater, in the UCLA Schoenberg Music Building Free Admission Faraz Minooei is one of the distinguished Persian musicians today who is an active composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator. He is one of the leading contemporary composers in Traditional Persian Music. He has performed and collaborated with renowned artists such as Yo Yo Ma, and three-time Grammy nominee Kayhan Kalhor. Faraz received his B.A. from San Francisco State University as a Nagle Scholar and the first World/Jazz music major with santur as his primary instrument. Later he went on to receive his Masters of Fine Arts degree in music with emphasis in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology from the University of California in Irvine. His thesis, Abstracting Iranian Classical Music, challenges the traditional practice of Iranian Classical Music to introduce innovative and transformative functions of the music in contemporary society.
