Farewell to the Whales of Tonga Our recent trip to swim among the humpback whales of Tonga has left such a deep impression upon all of us. I long to peer into the eye of a massive marine mammal that seeks our interaction, an animal that was hunted to near extinction a few decades ago. Living 60-70 years, many of the Tongan whales witnessed the horrendous slaughter and yet they are gentle around us, gliding by us for a closer inspection. On our last swim in Tonga, we were the only boat in a vast ocean. With 100s of miles of ocean around us, 5 whales kept returning to circle our group of snorkelers. The tropical seas are nutrient poor so they are not drawn to this area to seek nourishment. The Tongan waters provide an area to give birth, to sing and to socialize. Their movements were fluid and breathtaking. I am so honored to have share such an experience, both with whale and human.
