Farmers Oppose Nooksack Delta Restoration For a good chuckle, do not miss the the county council natural resources committee, 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2014, discuss a proposal to send a letter to the Army Corp of Engineers regarding the Puget Sound Nearshore Ecosystem Restoration Project (PSNERP) (AB2014-428). Here is the funny part. One of the local county Ag associations opposed a project, years in the making, and part of the Puget Sound Partnership Restoration Plan, to restore fish habitat in the Nooksack delta, at NO COST TO THE COUNTY, because they are so very, very concerned about not losing ag. land. Not concerned enough to oppose smaller lot rezones, or slaughterhouse rezones, and other forms of industrialization and fragmentation, but enough to oppose a free regional fish and nearshore habitat restoration project, that would assist in flooding issues. So, they enlisted support from Barbara Brenner, and now a very diplomatic letter is being proposed, offering to help the Army Corp of Engineers with alternative plans, because the county knows all about protecting habitat and thinks it can give the state and feds a few pointers.
