Farmers Prepare for a New African Consumer Shifting consumer trends call for re-evaluation of food productivity Africa’s 33 million smallholder farmers are responsible for up to 90 per cent of the continent’s agricultural output. Rapid urbanization has created a cluster of food insecure populations in cities and middle class brand conscious consumers. African smallholder farmers must prepare to supply poor urban neighborhoods in rapidly expanding cities. They must also be ready to supply consumers keen on presentation, branding and consistency.
