Farmers to be Paid to Reduce Runoff Into Lake Erie - An algae bloom clogging the Toledo water intake crib caused a drinking water outage last year, and now federal officials have put together a plan to enlist farmers to reduce the fertilizer pollution that runs into the lake from farms. They want farmers to reduce field runoff that contaminates the lake by planting cover crops and they will be paid to do that. These would be in areas identified as pollution hotspots. ow.ly/2TLCBO
