Farmington Public Schools receives $16,300 from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan Farmington Public Schools announced that it has received $16,300 in grant money from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan to support diversity-focused initiatives. These grants are two of 19 awarded to nonprofit organizations for youth-oriented projects in the region. Farmington Central High School will receive $6,300 to support students to attend a Communication Camp that will help strengthen communication skills to better address diversity issues. The District’s three comprehensive high schools, Farmington, Harrison and North Farmington High Schools, received $10,000 for diversity-focused activities. Farmington Public Schools’ grant proposals were designed to address some of the key findings of a survey of 1,100 youth throughout southeast Michigan. The survey was conducted by the Metropolitan Youth Policy Fellows, a diverse group of youth working together for a better metro Detroit Region. Their top findings resulted in six recommendations, including creating youth-driven programs to promote health and safety in communities, including community gardens and accessible parks and playgrounds, and the funding and promotion of programs that bring different racial and ethnic groups together. The survey findings were presented at a Youth Summit in September to more than 100 representatives of youth-serving organizations in the region. The young people were invited to respond to a request for proposals (RFP) from the Community Foundation to create fundable programs that address the policy recommendations the Youth Fellows identified. “We are impressed by all of the projects proposed in response to the largest youth-driven survey of young people in our region,” said Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan President Mariam Noland. “We are committed to support the leadership skills of youth as they work to improve their communities and make a difference.” To view the complete list of grantees, or information about the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, its grant making, special projects and initiatives, visit cfsem.org.
