Fascinating Fact #3: A further rift formed between Peter Gabriel and the rest of Genesis when movie director William Friedkin offered Gabriel the chance to write a film screenplay. Gabriel told the band he wanted time off to go to Hollywood to take on the offer. As Gabriel recalls, “around the time we started work on The Lamb, I had this call from Hollywood by William Friedkin whod seen the story Id written on the back of the live album and he thought it indicated a weird, visual mind. He was trying to put together a sci-fi film and he wanted to get a writer whod never been involved with Hollywood before. I would go bicycle to the phone box down the hill and dial Friedkin in California with pockets stuffed full of 10p pieces.” But the rest of the band rejected Gabriel’s request for time off, saying that this album should take precedence. So Gabriel left anyway. The band decided to just carry on composing, thinking that they would release an all-instrumental album. Eventually, Gabriel returned, and the album was finished in the form we now know it.
