Fascinating! My paternal grandfather, Alphonso Anzevino, fought for the Italian army in what my grandmother called World War I. He returned with a medal that read Guerra Italo-Turca 1911-1912. I understand this was also known as the Libya War. Between this evidence and from the stories my grandmother related it appears that he was definitely in Libya. According to my grandmother he was so thirsty that he would press his handkerchief into the mud in the bottom of a well, tilt his head back and wring the muddy water into his mouth to quench his parched throat. I also seem to recall her saying that that he was in Austria. He was taken prisoner and packages sent to him were never received. This may be true. He passed down several 1000 Kronen bills and some German currency, too. When I was a kid, I thought we were rich. So, While grandpa was probably not subject to the conditions in this excellent article, it was fascinating to read about this facet of Italian history and the conditions to which his colleagues were subjected. OK. Add to the bucket list research of Italian Army records about where he foughtm captured, so that I can understand what he experienced.
