Fascinating character. The lawyer who would defend anyone, using any tactics. Completely without principles, as far as I can tell. A high-functioning sociopath, but not violent. (At least as far as anyone knows. At one point he disappeared from the world for a decade. No one knows what he was doing, or where.) A Communist. A world composed of such individuals would resemble Syria under the Assad family, or an African keptocracy like Guinea-Bissau. But a few of them, just a leavening, may be necessary for a healthy society. Every ecology needs its vultures and jackals.
