Fascinating story. A lot of ways to look at it, but my impression is that this guy was doing the sorts of things that were far more effective than the standard military occupation doctrines that had failed not just over the last decade, but over the last two centuries by a series of foreign armies. In fact, the entire purpose of the Green Berets, as far as I understand it, is to find ways to turn the local populations into force multipliers. Sounds like he succeeded at that. The issue of the journalist and her own choices and ethics is a whole different interesting story.
