Fascinating, the research is now showing that planned homebirth can be safer for higher risk women as opposed to a planned hospital birth. Its not saying that there are no risks, but that outcomes are improved by planning a physiological birth. To me it makes sense that the midwifery model of care supports the natural physiology of labour, therefore less intervesntion is needed. Although some of these affects could be psychological, when you are told you are high risk this can affect you psychologically, inducing anxiety and fear which can inhibit natural hormonal responses that are essential for a smooth fast labour. Perhaps the high risk women that planned a home birth had also prepared for birth in a more indepth way and had probably worked through fears that were presented to them through a high risk label. I would love to see much more research on this. We know historically that the statistics produced by Ina May Gaskin at the Farm are very impressive and there was also a large piece of research acouple of years ago about Amish women that has similar results. We must be careful when we use intervention and what intervention is used as everything we do has an effect on outcomes including languidge that we use.
