Fast and Furious Goat Tyers Gallup, N.M. – The girls goat tyers played a game of leapfrog during the fifth performance of the ninth annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo on Tuesday night at Red Rock Park. Oklahoma’s Logan Gentry, the eighth cowgirl out in the event, took the lead with a 9.036-second time, but held onto the top spot for only about 20 seconds as Nebraska’s Libby Winchell followed immediately after with an 8.061-second run. Colorado’s Brianna Denton came up a few cowgirls later and turned in an 8.62-second run that placed her second behind Libby, but ahead of the top time when the night began. One cowgirl later, Utah’s Kaytlyn Miller made the first sub-eight second run of the week when she tied her goat in 7.849 seconds. That was the end of the assault of the on top spot in goat tying, at least for Tuesday night. So, why was the goat tying so fast during the performance? “The horses were working really good, the goats were good and everybody was aggressive,” Kaytlyn said. “We just hammered down tonight and it worked.” Kaytlyn had to wait out nine other goat tyers to see if her fast run on Shorty would hold up. “He’s a little, small pony and he’s my brother’s horse,” said the seventh-grader from Dammeron Valley, Utah. “I just hopped on him and decided that he worked good for me. I’ve been riding him for several years now. He can be a little spooky some times, but he is a good one.” Kaytlyn is also sitting sixth in the first round in girls breakaway roping, but didn’t have as much luck in the pole bending. She tipped a pole in her first run and is sitting 84th in the first round in that event.
