Fastest growing church... Its so despicably funny but outrightly saddening that in spite of our blatantly rotten spiritual condition, some of my brethren in Christ can still qualify their denomination with the kind of comparative adjective like fastest growing church. When I hear my brethren and fellow labourers in Christ say We are the fastest growing church..., mentioning their denomination, questions get birthed in me. 1. Who are we competing with? 2. Does such statement reveal that we want to prove that we are better than other brethren? 3. Has Christ sent us to build a church that is growing faster than that of another labourer or other member of his body? 4. Are the yardsticks of a fast growing church the number of parishes, number of membership, and the state of the churchs account? 5. If many of the pastors and much of the flock in our denomination are still carnal, babyish and undiscerning, can we still pride in being a fastest growing church? Despicable testimonies abound from the pulpit and the pew of these brethren of mine, yet we are excited about numbers in building and persons instead of mourning our spiritual state so that we can be comforted. Im so sorry about any speck of provocation this status can cause but I cant stand seeing Christs shepherd celebrating spiritual mediocrity of church membership and a large following, while we swim in organised hypocrisy and spiritual decadence. In a church I once saw, I never heard of any language that suggests competition with herself. By Gods grace I hope to complete the book Im writing titled There was once a church. Its in the present day church that anything is celebrated, even the downfall of a fellow labourer. I dont see it in the Bible that God will reward any denomination for being the fastest growing church. Hell reward every man... according as his worn is and fire will test our work. Many things that many pride over are but dung before God. Too many dead men are on many pulpits, preaching many dead messages to many dead people, yet we cheer ourselves for being the fastest growing church. May God raise this sinking church from the miry clay of worldliness and crave for filthy lucre. Amen.
