Fatal collision claims 3 lives, injures another near Lamesa: One woman and two men were killed, and a third man injured in an accident 10 miles southwest of Lamesa yesterday morning on State Highway 349. The men were Texas Department of Criminal Justice correctional officers employed at the Smith Unit in Lamesa. The collision occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. on Monday. The 3 correctional officers, Akinjobi G. Akinpelu, age 36, Olusegun Sangowale, age 34 and Akinola Fasae, age 51 had left the Smith Unit in Lamesa after their shift ended at 6 a.m. All 3 officers were in the same vehicle, a 2003 Toyota Avalon, and traveling southbound towards Midland when a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, traveling northbound, veered into the southbound lane, crashing head-on. The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze, Alexis Ayala, age 19 was pronounced dead at the scene, as was Officer Akinpelu. Officer Sangowale was taken to Medical Arts Hospital in Lamesa where he later died. Officer Fasae was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock and is expected to survive. All were wearing their seatbelts.
